the deeper problem is that psych ppl know to distinguish between ordinary responses and pathological and diagnosis vs treatment, but if they acknowledged openly it would further erode their authority

ie they say being sad after a death isn’t “depression” b/c not chronic. But what about response to a chronic stimulus like long-term unemployment? You might face a choice about Rx even if you think the response is “natural” (because it is non adaptive)

but admitting that psychiatrists are basically like the alchemist you buy power-ups from in a RPG isn’t compatible with the idea they’re like oncologists or pathologists

The problem is that small % of pop was hijacked by other groups and the problems generalized. So now one purpose of psych is maintaining social order. It's leaked into other medical fields too, no longer limited to psych.

Any disease that doesn't have a traceable physical cause is bogus. Restless leg syndrome? Lmfao Here's an example: you could be hyperactive because of a brain parasite, brain damage, enzyme deficiency, etc. But it's all considered "adhd"

yeah but if it produces the same cognitive profile and responds to same treatment, does it matter that damage repair would require different directions?

If you want to cure it, yes If it's impossible to cure (eg, brain parasite that would kill you if removed) give em the adhd meds
