the deeper problem is that psych ppl know to distinguish between ordinary responses and pathological and diagnosis vs treatment, but if they acknowledged openly it would further erode their authority

ie they say being sad after a death isn’t “depression” b/c not chronic. But what about response to a chronic stimulus like long-term unemployment? You might face a choice about Rx even if you think the response is “natural” (because it is non adaptive)

but admitting that psychiatrists are basically like the alchemist you buy power-ups from in a RPG isn’t compatible with the idea they’re like oncologists or pathologists
