It’s the Hjalmar Schacht principle. Schacht was the ultra-hawk who ended hyperinflation in Weimar Germany

But then in 1933 when Germany was hammered by a crisis brought on largely by inflation hawks, Schacht put back in charge. Disaster?

No, Schacht pioneered what we now call “Keynesian macro”. Turns out he wasn’t a hawk for it’s own sake, he was just a really, really good central banker

In 1923 he was given control of the currency to do one job, and he did it well. But that didn’t reflect his underlying commitments and when he was given free reign he did even better

I’m drawn to the Brahminical idea that anyone who associated with Bush/Cheney should be tarred forever b/c their motives are impure. But irl sometimes the cossacks work for the czar

Another example to contrast with Schacht is Nicky Machiavelli... he was too autistic to hide how much contempt he had for the political hacks he reported to so eventually he was um, sacked and tortured
