If I believe that for most Roman Catholics, fealty to the pope is about tribal affiliation rather than theology or faith, how should that change my interdenominational repartée?

yeah for most its about heritage, being part of the club, fish fries, private schools, etc. contrary to twitter tradcaths, you ask 95% of catholics if they believe mary periodically appears to teach prophecies and they will look at you like you're crazy.

American Catholics act towards catholicism the way american jews act towards judaism- most specifically delineate themselves from the people who take it "seriously"- & mostly show up to do the holidays- it's purely decoration.

yes, it's very much a oppositional-minority identity (and networking tool) on the model of judaism... sort of an ethno-proletarianization of Italian Catholics, Irish Catholics, Slovak Catholics

19th century immigrants all act the same & have a tribal self-identity as oppressed new yorkers. They even intermarried with each other more than with protestants.
