Probably everyone in these pictures ate real butter, eggs, whole milk, red meat, bread, the occasional milkshake or pie, etc. But they didn't drink 1,000+ extra calories a day in corn syrup and eat chips while playing vidya.
To the extent they consumed random extra sugars via drinks on a daily basis it was maybe a glass of orange juice in the morning if they were middle class, or a lump of sugar in tea or coffee.
