The friend-enemy distinction that ethnonationalists make is something that only exists contextually. Athens & Sparta fought each other before they allied against invading Persians. The Polis was the basis of identity, until a coalition had to be made by necessity.

The problem with the ethnat argument, is that the collective they want to form, if it was necessary, would form by necessity. You wouldn't have to "meme it" into existence.
