Usual disclaimer: I'm not saying and don't believe that Jordan Peterson types exist because of identity politics. But surely it's comprehensible why he appeals to young white men with shitty lives? That's a lot of people. If our movement includes everyone, it has to include them.

I think this is one of the clearest articulations of something a lot of people are wrestling with, myself included. Some percentage of Peterson's fans are just bigots happy to have their hatred justified by a guy with a PhD but...

... a signficant portion of them are also people (mostly white men) who legitimately see themselves in a world in crisis and Peterson is the only one offering them an explanation and a solution. It's a conservative, individualistic solution that won't work but its something.

I don't know how we build a successful movement for socialism/communism/whatever if we can't offer something that says to all kinds of people "the world is fucked, it's not your fault and together we can build somethng less fucked."

I do think that the broad left needs to have a very difficult reckoning with whether or not the current popular theories about race, gender, etc. actually equip us to build such a movement or if they've just backed us into a corner we can't think our way out of.

At the end of the day either they’re true or they’re false. If they’re false you’re gonna ruin people’s lives when you win, but you will win less and less b/c you can’t predict the future well
