It was a reaction to Idealism. British Idealism and OLP have both been reduced to bogeymen in the analytic tradition. Logical positivism is a species of Empiricism. Frege should probably be fit in there somehow.

think of the relationship between Kantians and Wolffian rationalists on the one hand and Cartesians on the other; they were opposed to both but they emerged out of the former, not the latter (that ordinary lang is a bogeyman - as is log positivism - does not mean not part)
