Good question from David Brooks: If less immigration would help the white working class, why is the white working class doing especially poorly in the places that don’t have many immigrants? https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/opinion/east-germany-immigration-usa.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region&region=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region …pic.twitter.com/B8QixqCBBY

Maybe bc immigrants move directy to wherever the job market is currently strongest whereas most ppl do not relocate en masse for new jobs every year

beyond exhibiting a lack of common sense, your comment shows a clear lack of familiarity with the principals behind a shared currency area with labor mobility between regional markets why bother to have opinions?

I also think there’s a “seen” versus “unseen” issue where a) some labor supply effects are transmitted to other markets and b) employers have incentive to move to immigration heavy markets and abandon those without

one of those reasons being that labor supply is more elastic in healthy markets

And maybe that's a problem. Internal migration is at historically low levels. Rather than sit around a defunct coal mine, why not pick up stakes? BTW new tax law cuts moving expense deduction, so you know GOP prefers stationary resentful addicts to productive workers.

I'm happy to raise domestic labor mobility the old-fashioned way: people traveled a long way to get to California back when it was an arduous journey, simply because demand for labor was really high

Not to mention that we know they're overwhelmingly migrating to more urbanized areas, which anyone with passing familiarity with the literature knows can be expected to do better regardless, and likely drive up the price of housing for would-be native movers in the process.

(not to mention secondary effects on the supply of affordable districts with "good schools" and such)

it's a crime that discussions of housing prices talk about "population growth" in the abstract, as a transcendental process, new citizens springing up from dragon's teeth like the Spartoi

Also maybe because jobs move to where there's a higher immigrant population. Either way it's a ridiculous observation.
