some oral tradition, perhaps... but not the talmud. maybe we should put it this way: the apocryphal books of the old testament are a better guide to the non-orthodox views of ancient judeans than any amount of speculation about customs they shared by word of mouth

look, let me put it this way: samaritans, essenes and talmudic rabbis are all developments from the religion of the Torah If you call the ppl who follow the Talmud “jews” you need another name for the religion of the Torah (I prefer “judaeans”).

Christians do not reject the truth of the Torah; Talmudists reject both the religious practices of Judea and the Judean priesthood’s interpretation of Judea’s law code

Are you referring to my analogy or this tweet you replied to? I can’t imagine the subteties of the Aramaic change the basic relationship b/w the two religions. Do I need classical Hebrew to judge whether or not Samaritans participated in the Temple cult?

Yes, you need to be familiar with the sources (not cherry picking them.) In fact, the Samaritans are explicitly not affiliated with the Temple-they claim Mount Gerizim is the place, not Mt. Zion. And the Sadducees, Essenes and Pharisees all agreed they were not Jews.

read my pinned post if you care to see that this was exactly my point - no, Samaritans not part of the temple cult, no you do not need to read their scriptures to confirm this You only need to know the OT and be aware the orthodox Judaean religion did not sacrifice on Mt. G.
