Let’s try this again: are Trump’s “shithole” comments the all-time ugly American statement? (If not, please specify alternative)
The quotation is "like writing history with lightning" and there is no contemporary evidence Wilson said that But he probably had no objection to the content of the film, no one started to deny that Reconstruction had been a mess until all the survivors were dead

No one white denied it. Trotter protested Wilson & the film, & DuBois was already contemplating Black Reconstruction as Wilson dutifully ignored all methodological approaches to contemplating history. Resegregating the White House/fed offices spoke to his Confederate sympathies.

they *protested* the film but they didn't deny that e.g. carpetbagger state legislatures were shitholes Have you read DuBois? He says it wasn't fair to judge newly freed slaves by normal standards, not that black politicians weren't corrupt fools

Yes, I've read DuBois quite extensively and am more than familiar with his classism that made him grievously unpopular in black grassroots and even middle-class politics. Re. state legislatures, Recon governments were fairly characteristic of state/fed admins that were

Rife with corruption and bribery until, roughly, the 1890s. What makes southern Recon governments unique from that is that Recon admins spent a great deal paying off/out intransigent unreconstructed legislators to get the bare minimums of progressive legislation passed or,

Reconstruction wasn't a disaster. Education amongst southern black people flourished, as did public education and healthcare initiatives in the South, generally. Federally, though loopholes and caveats were created, the 14th & 15th Amends were ratified. Those are achievements.
-
The failures of Reconstruction, of which there are many, were on the failure of the Federal government to continue to oversight on white supremacists at the state level, the failure to properly police white supremacists, & the desire to exploit the West.
