Naturally it was an internal Italian matter but I'm still puzzled why the pope would acknowledge the validity of an infant baptism performed by a serving wench with no say in the child's education

roman catechism allows for baptized Christians to baptize others in time of an emergency (like nearing death in this case)

um i'm pretty sure that only allows an extraordinary officiant, it doesn't make someone ordinarily ineligible for baptism eligible

because what is extraordinary about such a case is only that no ordained officiant is available; what qualifies the person being baptized is the same
