People sometimes read this as sadism, but I read it in a more positive sense - reverence for the awesome power of nature frees you from petty worries (but you need to witness it second-hand or else you're just scrambling to survive)

Oh I was joking about the (active) Schadenfreude. But I do interpret it as its *passive* form, perfectly universal to all humans. "Whew. Relieved this isn't happening to *me*." Would also fit well better w Epicureanism, though they constantly assert they never "compare fortunes".
