And the idea that this is a cold war "only one side is fighting" because Trump still says he wants to make deals with Putin treats actual US policy -- the escalating sanctions, the arms to Ukraine -- as an afterthought.

I'd add that a combination of presidential rhetoric about an openness to grand bargains and practical pressure on Moscow is, however accidentally, a better strategy than practical pressure plus presidential yelling about Cold War II.
