Putin's favorite rabbi is Chabad. One of the richest oligarchs in Russia & Putin confidante (a steel magnate [reminder: Wilbur Ross is currently doing a natsec investigation of our steel imports]) Roman Abramovitch supports Chabad.

What makes Chabad interesting: some of them think the Holocaust was God's punishment for Jews becoming secular, and they have messianic/apocalyptic tendencies because their last spiritual leader (they had 7 "Rebbes") died without an heir and possibly made claims to the title.

Political messiahs or false prophets? Locke makes a few rly excellent pts in "Reasonableness", one of which is that the false messiahs all interpreted the promised redeemer as a rebellion against Edomites
