In NYC or CA, maybe. There’s a world of lame but safe places out there with cheaper houses, tho! And the healthcare #s may be what gets billed, but don’t reflect what most people experience, certainly not most college grads.

Where exactly though? Even in a place like Kansas City I cant envision trimming much from his housing & daycare numbers with landing in a situation that "feels" well below middle class.

I mean the median national home price is 188, in Missouri the median is 144. And poor people aren’t really buying homes, so median homes will feel middle class.

it's super-expensive in cities that are super-expensive, and there are long waiting lists too

Our very pleasant church-based nursery school is 400/month for five day, five hour (roughly) care. But infant care is much more expensive , it’s true, and 5 hrs only allows for part time work.

I considered that. In this area, three kids is about the break even point for an au pair or nanny.

I think in NYC and CA, nannies may actually often be cheaper than in more rural areas, because of illegal labor

one of my wife's friends was in a mother's NYC group for professional mothers; she mentioned she wouldn't personally hire an illegal immigrant as a nanny, they banned her from the group

Lol, that rings very true Nothing gets you banned like questioning the child rearing decisions of the other ladies in the group
