If your ideology means you see everything as 'nonnegotiable', you won't have any strategy when disadvantaged, and you're doomed to failure. The US foreign policy community sees everything as nonnegotiable, from security commitments to democracy promotion to gay rights.

It's because Americans see geopolitics as a "science" (we teach "political science" in lieu of the classical "political economy") But politics is art - "the art of the possible"... Deep State otoh thinks implementing jejune formulae can create alternate political realities
