(if thinking about the good could substitute as a reward for the good itself, ppl wouldn't pursue the good at all, they'd just visualize it. homebrew VR)

thinking about the good typically means thinking about the fact that something IS good; i.e., rehearsing reasons X is good or considerations in X's favor

this typically works when you are poised in equilibrium between two alternatives, X and ~X, and you need your neocortex to play "spot the difference" and give you a shove one way or the other

if you've already decided on ~X, thinking about how great X is won't work. It's the cognitive equivalent of quietly composing a poem to your ex while your fiancée is coming down the aisle
