@QuasLacrimas had a good essay about why both elites and the poor tend to go astray and how our current social evolution tends towards "aspirational naughtiness"https://quaslacrimas.wordpress.com/2017/01/16/naughty-and-nice/ …

point abt middle-classness of virtue relate to evol psych arg I’ve thought about-costs of straying greater when you *can*increase offspring’s fitness through paternal efforts&can’t afford -not- to. costs of straying increase linearly w/# of legitimate offspring, benefits are flat

Well, men, too, if paternal investment is important to offspring survival (not true now obviously)

but men get to choose how much paternal investment to make, no?

Right, but you have to treat (either because of pissed off moms or genuine diversion of resources) the choice to stray as having genuine costs or monogamy could never have been even semi-stable

yeah, but I don't think the costs can be symmetrical or else it's not even a hard problem (anyway, in practice the bourgeois virtues are all interconnected and leaving your wife gets you a rep as a scoundrel - the point of my post)

Costs are never symmetrical (since qua William James higamous hogomous man is polygamous hogamouse higamous woman’s monogamous) but still costs exist
