When we say women aren't funny, we don't mean that women and men find different things funny We mean only men respond to comedy (just like men respond to mathematical elegance or the fury of war) and women will admire men whom other men think are funny

"Did you see Caroline's zit? omg" is not *funny* per se, although the discretion and sensitivity necessary to make the other girls laugh at Caroline is certainly a valuable skill

Isn't this what laughing is fundamentally about, though? It is serotonergic. Confidence (self and group) in superiority & victory. Hard to fake genuine laughter. Signals in-group faith.
-
Sure, but what is "fundamental" about a physiological response doesn't necessarily correspond to its cultural value.

The wonder you experience when you work through a difficult proof, the sublimity of a Bach concerto - these emotions are "fundamentally" rooted in far more humble activities

(btw I suspect that long term addiction to theorem proving might be comparable to long term amphetamine use in its effects on brain)
-
in severity or the specific effects?
-
Effects. Hard focus for many hours -> extreme dopamine/serotonin rush. Very few things give that great a high. Repeated sharp fluctuations must disfigure brain's reward systems eventually.
-
huh interesting
-
would also imply that amphetamine use builds interest in long focus without amphetamines tho, which is prolly false
