True, tulip bulbs are actually blossom into something beautiful and thus have some utility. Crypto-currencies have no utility beyond the "bigger sucker will buy it off me" theory. Pyramid schemes always come up empty for those left holding the bag.

right - but gold is a valuable asset, not money. I don't carry gold in a wallet; I don't balance my checkbook in grams of gold

Not any more at least, but that's mainly because we stopped printing currency by minting gold coins and issuing gold certificates.
