Islam became relevant, is the long and short of it. Suddenly a different ox was being gored by strident atheism, and it was an ox progressivism was a lot less interested in goring. :D

Nah. It's more that Christianity collapsed as a concern + Islam became relevant. The left no longer had any use for explicit atheism, so they dropped it. Meanwhile the right is conflicted on the subject.
