New post: "Which Translation of The Analects Should I Read?"https://wp.me/p1FRmK-S0
Do you think reading the Analects makes sense at all? I think it comes across as merely inscrutable to most people; Daxue or Xunzi much better intro to Confucianism

Other books may be a better introduction; Zhu Zi recommended The Great Learning as a starting-point, IIRC. However, I disagree 100%, if not 110%, that it's "inscrutable."
-
Most of the book isn't hard to follow, and decent annotations, as most of these translations have, make 95% of it perfectly comprehensible.
-
Remember though that you're now coming to them after previous exposure to the book, yes?
-
No, when I read Leys's translation at fifteen years old or so, I had no previous exposure to Confucianism whatsoever, and I was able to get the gist of much of it, esp. with his notes.
