this one looks like a cross between footers and links that got messed up in final edits - you see the "4." at the bottom?
Yeah, the 4 is just a mistake; I think Bowyer typically uses these numbers as links. Other writers do use actual footnotes, though.
I think it makes sense to use endnotes/footnotes to substantiate claims, and links for context/tangents/allusions/etc.
The entire point of hypertext is to link to sources directly, though. Footnotes are completely unnecessary unless a source isn’t available online.
