I always used to try to be "good" when ppl recommended books/research/etc by pretending that it sounded like a great idea and I'd def read
It'd've been better had I been naively arrogant (rather than sophisticated enough to know how dumb I was) & rejected the reccs

Then we'd have talked about why the book sounded dumb to me, why you would take that approach, etc. And with my ugly arrogance

...I would have looked stupid but blundered into a conversation that would have gotten me excited to read the book. Oh well.

Eventually you get there anyway, it just might take a decade or so to figure out why that approach is is necessary on your own
