But I’m not sure whether helpful to ignore an even earlier tradition of very important Dutch and English Greek scholarship (that didn’t end in the same place)

Dutch (and to some extent, French) classicists became obsessed with reconstructing authentic Hellenistic philosophical texts

my layman's impression is that, compared to English or French philology, the Germans tended to abstraction and 'egoism' (in Santayana's sense). they were more interested in working out their own aesthetic/philosophical ideas than in the texts themselves.

e.g. Hölderlin, Winckelmann, Nietzsche, etc. Maybe this is just an unfair impression i get from only being familiar with the outliers, who of course are going to tend to be less scholarly, rigorous, etc.

I think it’s partly lack of familiarity with the alternative (and a little bit of outlier-effect wrt eg Nietzsche, whose Geburt we don’t read as philologie)

yes, it's quite dense. was a bit of a mindblower for me, since i just wasn't familiar with most of what he was talking about, but i imagine it would still be a lot to take in for the more intellectually seasoned.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
