my layman's impression is that, compared to English or French philology, the Germans tended to abstraction and 'egoism' (in Santayana's sense). they were more interested in working out their own aesthetic/philosophical ideas than in the texts themselves.

No, compared to 17th/18th c’s at least Germans did an admirable job distinguishing the two concerns
