- useful to have an index card for tangential notes (like words you want to look up, off-topic facts you didn’t know) so they don’t clutter up the real notes

-if a book is hard you can use the conceit that you are trying to summarize it to help stay focused on reading: when you need to write down “what he says next” that helps clarify what you find difficult

like in histories, scribble down dates of events as they are mentioned and then try to figure out how you can represent all the sequences of events side by side
