I enjoyed Crazy Rich Azns ...just for the great joy in display of opulence...it didn't go far enough in this direction, there should have been even more attention to the different grades of luxury and to details of priceless jewels, etc.
Both concession of reality (once you ingrain habit, can’t shed it, and whole value of habit is fluidity of action) and ideal of channeling display and investment away from certain things so it can support others

Maybe but my grandparents (tho not anything like Buffet, lol) retained habits that were no longer strictly necessary given their means Thought it was part of being a “New Englander”

I think today it is mostly some combination of counter signals (maybe this is what you mean by LARP?) and lack of clear cultural standards (Zuck would not do a good job picking stylish suits)
