amazing that right after the idea of dinosaurs is propogated the field of paleontology explodes + tons of dinosaur bones are found all over earth. mind blowing that after thousands of years a handful of men could find 100s of different fossilized species. incredible. unbelievable

unreal that all of a sudden there were just places you could go and find tons of these dinosaur bones. so many that some early researchers died leaving some bones unanalyzed. fascinating that no one thought to dig into the earth to find all these bones before. they were so smart.

it was pointless to do paleontological digs before people figured out how to do relative dating from stratigraphy (circa 1790-1830)

one of the earliest “paleontological” finds was a pub in London that found elephant bones while expanding its cellar, but no one knew what to make of it - that was around 1680
