if some are smart and others dumb, then each have to learn material they will use in fields suited to their talents

but if you *become* smart by *learning* “how to think”, then what you learn is only useful if it is very general

a tool that is only useful to a doctor or an executive or a chemist can’t be what teaches you how to think!

the tragedy is not so much that idiots are encouraged to study topics that have no practical value (bugman logic)

but that no one else can study things that would be entirely pointless if you didn’t end up mastering them later

There's a difficulty that we want people to be highly trained in a specific area (say, "knows how to fix all of the problems with this specific copy machine") and also be able to get different jobs if there happen to be none in that specific area.

It's easy to produce people with very specific knowledge--just make highschoolers read copier repair manuals or train them to remove kidneys. It's also easy to produce people with wide, general knowledge--just make them read a bunch of intro to everything books.

It's doing both at once that's difficult. "Know everything about five different subjects" "take all the AP courses" "your degree should mean you're employable in your field and generally competent" "oh sorry your industry died while you were in college."
