So, in other words, they first needed to see the elephant in the room? :)

Scientists failed the mirror test for self-awareness-- until researchers made the mirrors big enough for their immense egos.

Every group has its egotists. I know many researchers and many of them are too focussed on their work to think about ego, and some are humbler than most evangelicals I know. Some are kinder & more generous, too, so please reconsider nasty remarks about researchers next time. Thx.

My golden retriever always new what a mirror was and that it was no only her reflection but mine too and knew how to use one mirror to watch me walk around the corner and she could keep an eye on me. But she was an uber nerd dog.

My birds always loved their mirrors. But I think like some of my dogs just thought it was another dog or bird in the mirror. But I can’t be so sure about that w the birds as they might have been lonely for another bird to love on so they used the mirror.
