“obrigado” is an adjective => “i’m pleased (or sth)”, not literally “thank you”
so it follows that it depends on the person saying it.

i always use obrigado even though i'm a woman. many people either don't care, use it the other way around bc they don't know the "rule", or use both interchangeably. so in practice it's kinda random

it's an adjective. adjectives have to agree in gender with the nouns they modify. in this case, with *your* gender. not a deep philosophical issue.
