it’s a little disappointing about lisbon that i can walk into a grocery store and feel like i basically walked into an american grocery store with slightly more fish. but like the same magazines, the same packaging… same kinds of ads on the street… very little culture shock

wondering how recent of a trend this is, would it have been this way 10, 20, 50 years ago? globalism seems to have at least superficially really done a number on the city’s culture. or maybe i’m only seeing relatively touristy areas, idk. nothing has felt really alien

i do appreciate that there’s been noticeably more street life than in any american city i’ve been to. lots of hanging out outdoors. that part does feel nice and i wish i saw more of it in the states

yeah a large part of lisbon is there to cater to tourists/digital nomads/expats. you can find stuff that isn't like that tho, but it might not even occur to you to go there because it is illegible

we ended up looking around this postindustrial zone that is completely illegible to google maps, we could not find a supermarket. the city protects itself against gentrification by making itself confusing and inhospitable to foreigners
