small talk is literally just foreplay guys. you gotta warm people up to interactions. sometimes you can do it *very quickly* but you still *do it*, you don't just jam your conversational penis in immediately, so to speak

small talk is about establishing trust at the monkey level. you can try all you want to start conversations like "so what are your biggest dreams and childhood traumas" or whatever but inevitably some people will be like "why the fuck should i tell you" and they're right

i think what sucks the most about asking "so what do you do?" is when you don't actually give a shit about the answer; people can tell and it doesn't feel good. so ask questions you're actually curious about. "so what are you doing here at this event?" is one of my standbys

small talk isn't about the contents of the chat it's about creating a social vehicle to exchange non-verbal signals of enjoyment of each others presence with someone you wouldn't be interacting with otherwise
