so, context: some time ago i became annoyed at how much wordy thinky stuff was happening at rationalist parties (even the *naked* parties 😩) and had the idea to throw a "nonverbal party": no spoken or written words, all consent negotiated nonverbally, maybe one verbal safe zone

@QiaochuYuan you gotta host that "no words allowed" party, it'd be fascinating!

anyway i never ended up doing it but some of the tpot-europe crew like the idea so maybe we'll try to make it happen here. would be worth brainstorming some more details, e.g. i'm not sure about music (instrumental only? put out instruments and wait to see if anyone plays?)

i would personally like to allow non-word vocalizations (grunts, squeaks, hums) but it's a little tricky to nail down the boundary between that and words. may just need to trust people to keep to the spirit of the thing

this could also go here

Small talk is fine because people themselves are not at all small, & while we bathe in their presence we make these little cute irrelevant noises about each other like piglets grunting Only when we’re numb to presence do we demand “depth experiences” from others through language

I'm into this. U can also do 3 hrs of no talking and no one can join after those 3 hours. And transition out of silence w "no reply" (10' timer, only say a thing after u checked that a. it's not a reply to anything else and b. it's meaningful to say) h/t

U can put out 2 small erasable Whiteboards so 2 people can have a conversation in writing. I wouldn't worry about lyrics. The social patterns come from doing the act of talking more than the words themselves.

I might steal this concept. Music is a big question: without it party could be really quiet, which would increase the weird factor for better or worse. Having music encourages dance with is a much more familiar form of non-verbal communication (good dance parties are non-verbal!)
