there’s a mental event i’ve recently gotten a lot of mileage out of noticing, of my mind doing something like skipping / stuttering / tripping over a rock / running into an invisible wall, when trying to think about some topic; every time it’s turned out to be a chunk of shadow

it’s the sort of thing that actually makes me interested in trying to train sensory clarity, b/c it’s a pretty small and fast mental event and it’s really quite easy to not notice if i’m not paying attention. hopefully this means the shadow chunks are getting smaller over time

absolutely, a meditation I like is to go through every body part (to whatever level of detail you like) and pay attention to it until it releases. when you notice that you rushed past one part quickly with "nothing to see here" that's the one to focus.
