i just watched the movie recently! i really assumed they made up a bunch of it to pad for time and then i read a summary of the book and it was basically all there and i just forgot
the movie gets to play directly with allowing him to see more color which is so cool. plus: jeff bridges and helen mirren

Unsolicited book recommendation if you want it—IMO the Greensky trilogy by Zilpha Keatley Snyder is a more interesting version of a very similar story
