one of the funny things books on the history of go will say sometimes is that the giants in the history of go weren't particularly good at anything else. they were mostly just people who played go their whole lives and were really insanely good at go and that's it

like it's not a coincidence that historically one of the flowerings of go happened in japan during a period where japanese culture could support some aristocrats pretty much just playing go and doing nothing else (iirc)
