every time i see mindfulness or therapy stuff in a mainstream context (magazine cover, youtube ad) i just want to throw the whole concept of self-improvement into a fire and learn how to build log cabins or something

Self-improvement is one of the most disillusioned industries and narratives I am aware of. We can improve our understanding of something… but ourselves… We can just be, or let what’s competing for our attention drain us of our life force.

Then, you haven't actually internalized the meaning of mindfulness and are just doing the trendiness in a different way than the tabloids... Others' journeys should not cause you to have a visceral reaction and then turn to social media to cope and seethe with others...
