And regardless of the correctness of Legg's and Hassabis's personal AGI (and safety) beliefs and strategies, just getting the funding and talent pool into Deepmind (which then OpenAI was founded really to compete and prevent a monopoly on) has given the AGI mission huge momentum

he is, pretty sure he's publicly said things along the lines of "the fact that my work helped cause deepmind and openAI to exist makes the net effect of my contribution to humanity enormously negative, not even close," don't remember if this was on twitter or fb or elsewhere

In terms of impact he's probably moved the needle in the direction he wanted but somewhat more by luck than strategy I don't think Deepmind and OpenAI would exist now if the Rats hadn't catalysed the Bostrom Singularity movement to put many people into the same room together

this is a long story that isn't documented anywhere that i know of but eliezer was the catalyst for the formation of CFAR specifically and the rationality community broadly, which brought together the people who founded an organization called the future of life institute
