very confused why text spam filtering isn't a solved problem. can i whitelist so only people in my contacts can text / call me on an iphone?

Yeah you can, though for me the problem is that most legitimate phone calls I get come from numbers I don't have...

you can silence unknown calls (settings->phone), and filter unknown texts to a separate list (settings->messages). i think thats the best you can do with built-in functionality

My provider (AT&T) and presumably others have a feature rolled into the basic plan that does this. You just have to enable it on your account.
