there’s a whole thread from awhile ago about how people with ADHD lowkey don’t have object permanence and i was a little insulted by it at first but after a few months i think i just buy it now

I wonder to what extent ADHD is about externalized memory. If you can’t see it, you can’t think about it, so everything is out in plain sight and they have to scan/dart around physically, and in non-home environments it looks like “distractability” (to be clear, I am not ADHD)

hm i wonder how it vibes with this thread (which i vibe a lot with and have found useful for cultivating changes)

The basic attitude towards ambiguity becomes negative. The attentional schema becomes one of seeking out information about how things might go badly. Notice the similarity to what in adhd diagnosis is called heightened rejection sensitivity. 3/

realized i actually forgot the thought blurb that prompted the thread… “adhd is a syndrome where the state of concentrating on a non flow-inducing task is indistinguishable from lack of parental love and attention” twitter.com/a_yawning_cat/…

I barely have object permanence. I rarely think of people or things that aren’t literally in my field of view. The moment I say bye after hanging with someone they’re usually wiped from my brain. Flip side I’m present if you’re in my field of view, not thinking about other things

I think the same muscles that handle ruminating handle object permanence. Get rid of one and you lose the other too

I have sometimes expressed to loved ones “if I don’t tell you about this right now I know I’m gonna forget later”. And then it always comes true :/
