it depends *entirely* on the delivery, and IMO people basically vote yes or no depending on the delivery they're imagining in their mind

I think the trickiness is an illusion. It's tricky bc there's fear of coming across poorly, & rather than just internally holding the fear the speaker tries to force the EXPRESSION to go well. Which tries to mask the fear, making creepiness more likely, inviting a feedback loop.
