the fact that psychology majors don’t have a reputation as being particularly charismatic or good at relationships or even at managing people is a pretty damning indictment of either academic psychology or college or both
by the way you could substitute "psychology majors" for "therapists" or "meditators" here and i think it would still be true 😛
in all three cases there are substantial selection effects. people are drawn to these practices because they can tell they're really fucked up
source of all of this is that I was a psychology major, got a degree and all of that good stuff and my favorite class was:
abnormal psychology
where people would out themselves constantly

tbh the mind is weird and you should not expect "controlling" it to be easy or straightforward -- and that's what you're implying they should be able to do . control people's minds . which a good psychologist doesn't want to do in the first place .
