i’m not sure. at one point i was playing with the idea that literally all tears are tears of grief. i’ve also cried at beautiful things and for me there’s a grief there about how ugly everything is the rest of the time

seems like onions kind of break this thesis, but I’m open to the idea that crying bc of crying of beauty is grief of previously being blocked or not able to see beauty or something

do onions actually make people *cry* or just make their eyes water? presumably the latter is the obvious thing it appears to be, a way to wipe contaminants out of the eyes?

Yeah I don’t think onions count. Crying isn’t just tears; it’s an expulsion of breath, and a convulsion, sometimes of the whole body

I have heard legend that the chemical content of crying tears is different than that of eye-watering tears. Onion tears are obviously (to me) the latter.
