If you used to get completely overwhelmed by emotions to the point of not being able to function or doing things you deeply regretted, and then stopped, what made the difference for you? What tools, techniques or beliefs did you find helpful?

Verbalize your emotions and talk about them, describe them in detail to someone non-judgmental. Talking about things redirects information in the brain to the areas that deal with language, reducing the physiological pain.

Yeah I usually find this quite helpful, especially if I write it all down, but some of my friends said this gets them stuck in a loop that leads to some very dark places. Do you have some recommendations how they could get unstuck?

rumination is about being too abstract. when in doubt go more concrete - ideally telling specific stories about things that happened need to create enough safety to be able to do this w/o dissociating though, which depending on level of trauma could be a very long process
