He said he only stopped acting because there were so few opportunities for asian actors. When Crazy Rich Asians came out he decided to get back in the game and within a few weeks, totally by coincidence, Daniels remembered Short Round and wondered what he was up to...

He got the role after two auditions. He was so concerned about doing a good job that he hired four different acting coaches for different aspects of the performance. Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh both have great things to say about working with him.
I love his comeback story
