So I watched 's recent interview & the blue/orange lighting was so dope that I had to do a study. And then it got hecka emotional, so I did facial expression studies.

holy crap these are good! i gave up on drawing faces temporarily because it just seemed so impossible to get them right with a pencil at least. this is... digital paint? physical paint?

It's digital. Stick with pencil/line for faces until you can get them nailed. If you want to learn a new medium, paint something simpler for you. American-style comic artists are the best at simplifying the crucial facial elements btw. Learn from them if you can

See, imo my study does not hold up against this comic style study. Sure I have brushwork, but line is all you need. These are such strong expressions and so economical, you can just see how second nature it is for the artist

yeah wow these are beautiful, thank you. i've been wondering if like... you can kinda go either line-first or shading-first and either can work? like strong enough detail in one can compensate for lack of the other or something?

i've been trying to draw breasts specifically and it seems so difficult to do line-first because so much of the 3d shape seems to be conveyed by subtle shading and lighting cues. but maybe my lines just aren't that good ๐

No, shading cant make up for poor lines. Lines are your structure, the edges of forms, so if you cant formulate lines then you arent able to shade anyway. There is a reason that in an atelier the learning process is pencil, then graduate to charcoal, then graduate to oil paint/

You can use line to mark shadow by including the terminator (line between light and shadow where shadow is darkest.) See the buttocks in this cast drawing. The shadow is darkest there because rim light invades the main body of the shadow. Do this accurately, & you can shade

You can maybe learn it all at once, Im just saying shading wont fix bad line/form. It's like asking if you put barbie makeup on a batman toy, will it look like a barbie then? No it still has the underlying shape of a batman. Lines are your shape, you'll be lost without them

gotcha gotcha, makes sense. i used to shade when i drew in high school but i gave it up recently b/c i wanted to focus on lines, good to know that i was on the right track with that ๐
Thats great! Line doesnt have to be dull. There are so many contemporary artists that use line as the center of their work. Some of the best artists in the world use line. Line is so cool & versatile, it shows style much more than realist style shading does. I'm in love with it
