so i was using a non-stick pan to cook but i fucked it up and it started flaking so i switched to an unseasoned cast iron pan. which is working fine but then i have to clean a lot of stuff off the bottom every time. should i season it? anyone have strong opinions about how?

ah didn’t know about preheating, thx. with or without oil?
i clean it by putting in water with no soap then heating it back up on the stove. can’t remember where i picked this up from but it works p good

you can definitely use soap in a seasoned pan, dishwasher not recommended though

to expand on this: the "no soap in cast iron" meme came from a time when soap usually had lye in it (which will strip your pan), soap doesn't have lye in it any more
"clean with soap, rinse, dry, coat with just a little oil" is what I do w/ seasoned cookware

ah! yeah, the seriouseats article mentioned modern soap is a lot more gentle now. thx, that’s helpful
